Responsive sites are great, however, they can put us in a position where we end up counting every CSS character we add. With true responsive designs, we are now loading styles for three different layouts all at once hurting performance most notably on mobile. It’s either end product performance issues such as render lag, or development performance issues where the codebase becomes cluttered & confusing.
Taking a step back however, we can solve both issues through architecture. Yes, we can have a single easy to maintain modular codebase, serving CLEAN mobile code which also works fully responsive in other browsers (works in IE8).
